Update on building works
Since my email to you on Tuesday, I have received some communications expressing dissatisfaction with the situation. It is most unfortunate that the school had to delay opening and I’m very sorry that this decision had to be made at all, and at short notice. Much as one would like to know weeks in advance whether a deadline will be met, this is not possible in a complex building project with so many moving parts. We were very aware that it would inconvenience our families and pushed our contractors and others to do everything possible to get the building ready to accept the children on Thursday.
Until the start of this week our contractors expected to be complete in time for us to document all necessary safety procedures and risk assessments. However, a couple of significant and unexpected problems arose over the weekend which, taken together with the fact that some tradesmen had not been able to finish all their work, meant that by Tuesday morning it was clear that we would not be ready by Thursday, and that it would be irresponsible to allow the children to enter the building until they are resolved.
We took the decision to delay opening and tell parents as soon as we could and hope that you will understand the position we were in. At the time of notifying parents, we had no access to emails, which is why the message was sent via SMS, as we needed to let you know as soon as possible.
We are absolutely determined to open on Monday and have no doubt that we will do so.
Arrangements for next week
As you are aware, the changes to the building have meant that classes have been reallocated to the following areas of the school:
Ground floor – Year 2
Second floor – Years 1, 3 and 4
Children should enter the school building via the usual entrance from Monday morning. There will be staff on duty on the stairs and on the ground floor, to direct children to their classrooms and ensure their safety. For children in Year 1 only, parents/carers are welcome to accompany their children up to the second floor for the first day, as this may be a daunting experience for some of them.
End of day arrangements will remain the same, with pupils lining up in their classes on the green space.
All parents/carers will have the opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and see the building at the ‘Meet the teacher’ meetings next week. These meetings will be held at the following times:
Monday, 7 September – Years 1 and 2 ( 3 – 3.30pm)
Tuesday, 8 September – Years 3 and 4 ( 3 – 3.30pm)
Please report to the main office/reception area, which is now located on the ground floor, next to the morning entrance for pupils.
I will send out a newsletter at the beginning of next week, updating you further on the building works and other key dates for this term and the year ahead.
I look forward to seeing you and the children on Monday.
