Under the National Curriculum, which we follow, all schools are required to offer a modern foreign language at Key Stage 2 – to children aged 7 and over.
At Judith Kerr Primary School, we do much more than that and are improving all the time. We teach and learn German using various approaches, starting children off early in the Reception class. Similarly to English, we have integrated language sessions where the children learn about various topics in German, and we also have language sessions using Talk for Writing approaches. In addition to this, we have regular German assemblies, music assemblies where we learn German songs and our German staff speak in German throughout the day.
A fair number of our pupils come from families that speak German at home, but that’s by no means a requirement for success in German, and most of our pupils know no German when they start at JKPS. Our inclusive approach means that all children benefit from the curriculum we offer, whatever their starting point. Children joining the school at any time are supported to enable them to gain a foothold in the language and make progress.
