How do I apply for a place at the school?

What happens if my child still attends another school?
If your child is currently at another school, you will need to complete an in-year Southwark application form. Contact us at admissions@jkps-cfbt.org and we will send you the forms you need. Once we receive notification from Southwark, or the borough your child is currently attending school in, we will contact you for an appointment.
When will my child start in Reception?
Usually children join Reception class in the September before their 5th birthday. Please refer to the school admissions policy and for further advice you can speak to the school office staff.
Does Judith Kerr Primary School have a Nursery?
At present there is no Nursery year at JKPS.
Do you have a waiting list for all year groups including Reception?
We currently have a waiting list for Reception, but not for older year groups. If you would like to be added to the waiting list or enquire about moving your child to JKPS, please contact us by telephone on 020 7738 6481 or send an email to admissions@jkps-cfbt.org.
Does Judith Kerr Primary School charge any school fees?
No. As a state-funded school, we do not (and must not) charge fees for any place at the school. All offers of places are made impartially, in accordance with our admissions policy.
Learning German at JKPS
Why do you offer German?
At Judith Kerr Primary School, we know that children need the skills, sensitivity, and character to navigate an increasingly complex and fragmented world and to create the opportunities they deserve for further learning, personal growth, and work. We believe that one way to help them acquire these skills is through language.
What if my child doesn't speak German?
Our school is fully inclusive. Our non-speakers of German follow language programmes from the Goethe Institute differentiated according to entry level.
What if my child already speaks German at home?
Our school is fully inclusive. Our fluent speakers of German, including non-native speakers who are fluent in the language, will follow the curriculum of the German Land of Baden-Württemberg. Teachers carefully select and plan lessons to meet the language needs of the children.
How can you deliver such a thorough language programme?
We do this by ensuring we have German-speaking staff, integrated curriculum where German is learned through other subjects as well as in specific German language lessons, events, parent and volunteer involvement and a regular team of trainee teachers from Germany acting as interns to support the teaching of German.
I'm thinking about sending my child to JKPS, but am worried he or she won't cope with the language
Our German team will ensure that your child is adequately supported on entry. Early language acquisition is done through repetition and learning language patterns. Children are exposed to stories and songs accompanied by visuals, which ensures that children can access the learning. Teachers then differentiate further with additional adult support, visuals and speaking frames, just as they do in English lessons.
What evidence will I get of my child's progress in German?
All parents will receive regular updates at parent consultation meetings twice a year and on the end-of-year report to parents. From September 2018, all children will be assessed in the four language acquisition domains using a programme called ‘The language magician.’ Teachers will use this information to plan for the individual needs of each child. At the end of primary school, Year 6 children will take part in the Common European Framework assessments which take place at the Goethe Institute. Children will be entered for a language exam at their level starting at A1.
How well do children at JKPS do in the national assessments (SATs)?
Our results are published on our website. Our Key Stage 1 children (age 7) do very well and exceed national standards across the board. We had our first published set of Key Stage 2 (age 11) results in July 2018, which significantly exceeded the national average too.
What should I do if I have a concern about a child, staff member or other member of the school community?
Depending on the nature of the concern:

  • If it’s about your child, you should speak to the class teacher in the first instance, the Head or a member of the senior leadership team;
  • If it’s about a staff member or any other member of the school community, please speak to the Head.
What should I do if my child is bullied or I suspect they are?
Advise your child to speak to an adult in the school. This can be any member of staff that they feel comfortable with. You may also wish to support your child by talking to the teacher with your child. We encourage children to report any incident to the class teacher so that they can observe behaviour during lessons and advise lunchtime staff as necessary.

We take allegations of bullying very seriously and any incidents are dealt with appropriately and with speed. If you are concerned about your child please speak to the Head of School and please never approach a child or another parent about such a matter.

Communicating with members of the school
What time is best to speak to the class teacher?
In the morning teachers are busy preparing for the school day. We therefore encourage you to speak with your child’s class teacher at the end of the school day after the children have been dismissed. We can also make appointments in the school office for parents to see the class teacher or another member of staff.
How do I get an appointment with the Head?
To request an appointment with the Head, you can send an email via our contact page or by sending an email to the school office. You can also see the Head at drop off or pick up on most days.
How do I get an appointment with the school SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)?

How can I make my views heard as a parent/carer?
Parent council meetings are held with the head once a half-term. General queries from parents are brought to these forums where the Head or a member of the senior leadership team will attend and aim to answer as fully as possible.
School opening times & additional provision
What time does school start?
School doors open at 8.45am and registration is at 9am.
What time does school finish?
School ends at 3.15pm. Children attending after-school clubs wait in the hall under adult supervision until the clubs start at 3.30.
What time do morning clubs take place?
Morning clubs start at 8am or 8.30 am. Please check the club list. Our breakfast club service starts at 8am.
What time do after-school clubs take place?
After-school child care runs in two sessions: 3.30-4.30pm and 4.30-5.30pm. Other after school clubs run from 3.30-4.30pm.
What is the music provision at JKPS?
We have a music teacher on site who teaches music to all year groups. All children learn to play a musical instrument every year. In reception, children explore music creatively by being exposed to various sounds and instruments. In year 1 children learn the glockenspiel, in year 2 they learn recorder, in year 3 it’s samba (percussion), in year 4 they learn the violin, in year 5 the ukulele, and in year 6 keyboard. Parents are invited to regular concerts and assemblies where you can see the progress the children make throughout the year. All children learn to compose and read music. All children get an opportunity to sing and we have active school choirs that perform in London-wide events.
Parental involvement
What are the opportunities for parents to contribute to the school?
We encourage parents to get involved in various ways from attending trips to supporting individual reading. The Friends of Judith Kerr Primary School is a registered charity, run by parents and independent of the school, that organises highly successful fund-raising events throughout the school year. It always welcomes new members with ideas, contacts, and a willingness to help out.

We also hold various events and special weeks throughout the year, with focuses across the curriculum and advertise opportunities for involvement in our weekly Head of School newsletter.

How can I get a copy of the school newsletter?
Parents are emailed the newsletter once the children start at JKPS. Recent issues can also be found on our website.
School uniform
Is uniform compulsory?
Yes. Our uniform specifications are on this page. Children must wear grey trousers or skirt (girls), white polo/shirt and a school cardigan or jumper with the school logo. Children also need to wear school shoes and have a PE kit with the school logo on the T-shirt.
Where and when can I buy uniform?
Please order items of uniform in advance by filling out an order form at the school office or by emailing the office. Uniform may be collected at the school office.
Where/how do I pay for uniform?
We run a cashless school. Uniform must generally be paid for in advance via ParentPay – an account will be set up for you once your child joins the school. For in-year admissions, payments maybe exceptionally be made by cheque or cash in the first instance.
How does the school support transition to the EYFS?
Throughout the summer term before starting in September, the school will provide opportunities for new Reception children to come in and meet the class teachers and have stay-and-play sessions. Our teachers will also plan to visit your child at their nursery or home (if they don’t attend nursery).

Reception children will then have a staggered start in September, having 2-3 half days and then starting full-time. Where parents and teachers have concerns about the child’s emotional wellbeing or agree the child should be on a part-time timetable, this will be discussed and approved by the Head. This is rarely necessary.

How does the school support transition from EYFS to KS1?
The final 4 weeks of term will see the children put into their new class groups for: circle time discussion about moving on; visits to their Year 1 Classroom; visits from the Year 1 teacher; sharing learning journeys and reports with new teacher; weekly foundation stage assemblies addressing transition; designing coat peg labels; producing artwork for their new classroom display; short whole class input sessions in Reception and work at the tables; streaming for phonics from Reception; music lessons and PE taught by other teachers. These activities all help prepare children for the change. They receive challenge sheets in the summer term to complete activities before moving on to free-flow in Year 1, when the children will continue to access the EYFS outdoor space as well as the large playground.
How does the school support with Year 6 Transition to secondary school and where will my child go?
We offer varied support in the transition from primary to secondary school. This process includes a parent meeting, workshops, Southwark booklets and individual meetings with the head teacher. The school will keep you well informed regarding the CAF (common application form) process.

Year 6 children will be prepared for secondary school through our PSHE programme, secondary-style lessons and homework. The children will also have various sessions about safe independent travel, what to do in emergencies and various types of bullying.

Our pupils go on to a wide variety of secondary schools in Southwark, Lambeth, and further afield, as well as obtaining places at private schools.

Property and lost property
Labelling your child's possessions
Parents must either sew a name label into all clothing or write the child’s name in indelible ink. Please also ensure that every other item (e.g. bags or books) that your child brings into school is clearly marked with his or her name.
Can my child bring their own toys to school?
No, we discourage toys or collectables (e.g. football cards) being brought to school, unless the class teacher has specifically requested that they be brought in. Please always check with the class teacher.
Can my child bring their own books to school for independent reading?
We encourage children to read books from our class and school library to avoid their personal books from being misplaced.
Where can I find lost items of clothing at JKPS?
If an item goes missing your child must inform the class teacher and class teaching assistant and look in the lost property. We will do our utmost to find lost items but we are unable to provide a replacement. At the end of the school day, we place two large ‘lost property’ boxes by the entrance to the playground where parents can access and search for items too.
Travelling to school
What is the best way to get to school?
We encourage parents and children to come to school on foot, by bicycle, or using public transport. More guidance here.
Can my child cycle to school?
Yes, your child can cycle if they are accompanied by an adult. If you wish your child to cycle on their own we would need a permission letter from the parent or carer with parental responsibility. A secure cycle shed is provided on site. We recommend that children only be permitted to cycle alone to school once they have passed their cycle proficiency test.
Can my child go home by itself?
No, all children must be accompanied by an adult. If you wish an older child to walk home from school alone we must receive a permission letter from the parent with parental responsibility, except in Year 6 where oral permission is acceptable.
Can parents drive into the school grounds?
There is no parking for staff or parents at the school. However, parents of disabled children may drive in to deliver or collect their child. Disabled staff members may park in the designated disabled parking space.
